There's plenty of aphorisms out there which try to describe what this post is about...
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Happiness is in wanting what we have, not in trying to have what we want.
Gratitude is a powerful internal motivation tool. Not external motivators like money or prizes or ticks on a chart. External motivators which fade so quickly, unable to effect any lasting change.

But the feeling of genuine appreciation for what you have right now cannot be underestimated. It places your thoughts in the present, without pining for some imagined improved future. It centers you. You become at peace with where you are right now in your life. In fact, it is even better than that: you are not just at peace, but utterly content. You might aim for something different, but if it is not achieved, you are still happy with what you have now.
Simple, brilliant, powerful stuff!
Not that this needs to be big. Trying to hold gratitude for everything all at once would be like trying to breathe in the entire sky, clouds and all. Start little: perhaps with thanks for a sunny day, or rain on your garden, or a delicious meal or the smile on a friend's face.
From little things, big things grow. Breathe in the sky.
