Are you here? Really here? Right now, in this moment?
Multitasking is a common activity these days, particularly with the internet in every phone. Even if we are not actively on our phones or tablets while carrying on our lives, we are now wired to do multiple things at once. Women, especially are prone to planning while doing other chores.
We can multitask. But should we? Multitasking actually comes at quite a high cost, as we attempt to hold lots of different information simultaneously and switch between them all. This isn't effective and in truth, slows us down. Counter-productive!
But not only does this make us inefficient at our future planning and task management, we miss out on what is truly happening right around us. We miss out on the details, miss out on properly engaging with the people nearby, we miss out on life.
Which is not to say that spending time planning is bad, or that accessing email and sending text messages is wrong. Only that we should think about devoting time to do just that, only that, where it can take half the time and not interrupt other things.
People talk about mindfulness, on being present in the 'now'. I call it living.
